I too agree. Yesterday’s NYTimes had an interesting (if oversimplified) op-ed piece by David Brooks, and today’s Times had a good article re Descartes vs Aristotle, both addressing this same subject. Too often the dualism seems to me to fall between those who insist that society cannot exist without absolute moral rules promolgated by a transendent divine authority and those who believe that government and morality are human institutions that are often, yes, flawed but always individual, nuanced, and based on compassion, always evolving, always relative. That seems to be pretty scary for some folks.
